Working with the University of Hull, we created one of the first SKA Gold rated educational hubs in the UK.

The University of Hull’s Energy & Environment Institute (EEI) needed a new home. With sustainability at the heart of the EEI’s work, we knew it needed a building that didn’t just ‘consider’ the environment - but embraced it. So that’s what we created.

The first education building in the UK to achieve a SKA Gold rating

Through relationships with specialist suppliers and contractors, along with our knowledge and experience of design and materials, we were able to create the first SKA Gold rated education building in the UK. Here are some of the standout features:

  • 80% of carpet and soft floor finishes were reused/recycled
  • 50% of vinyl finishes were recycled through a closed-loop scheme
  • 80% of the timber flooring was reused – with the remaining percentage diverted from landfill

When the building opened in 2020 it was one of only 16 projects in the UK awarded a SKA Gold accreditation.

The accreditation, operated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), recognises building refurbishments and fit-outs which have been completed with a truly ‘green’ focus. Its criteria includes biodiversity, insulation, energy efficiencies in lighting and heating and the amount of waste the building produces.

A functional, productive and aesthetically pleasing workspace

Previously located across several disparate locations, the EEI secured funding through the university to create a tailored solution and bring all departments together into one fully refurbished building. We supported with this rationalisation, reimagining the space for the EEI’s teams to come together for the first time under one roof.

Our design enabled us to create a space that both the university and the department could use as a showcase. It models a contemporary workspace that emulates the very ethos of the EEI through biophilic design and wellness design principles.

As well as being an attractive space for the team to spend time in, the people-inspired design incorporates collaborative meeting areas and break-out spaces. This means that the building is a functional and productive workspace too.

We wanted to create a space which was both modern and stylish, but which also showcased excellence in sustainability…With the support of our Estates team and the contractors Chameleon Business Interiors – who deserve an enormous amount of credit for this project- we have created a space which truly practices what it preaches This SKA Gold award is recognition of the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the refurbishment.

Professor Dan Parsons, Director at the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull.
